Some of the most memorable moments in Hindi cinema history have come from casting decisions that end up breaking the typecast, leaving audiences stunned. When it is done successfully, the impact is lasting, as in the case of Dev Anand in Jaal, as I described in my post about Bombay Noir.

Breaking the typecast is one of the boldest creative risks a filmmaker can take, and when it pays off, it rewrites how we see an actor forever. From the days of the Golden Era to more modern times, directors have repeatedly taken familiar faces and placed them in startlingly unfamiliar territory. Sometimes as a deliberate subversion of their established image, sometimes as a calculated gamble to breathe fresh life into a stale career.

Breaking the Typecast is a Hit or Miss

Not every breaking of the typecast is successful. When Dev Anand played the role of a ruthless smuggler in Jaal, he started a new genre of movies with antiheroes. On the other hand, Rajesh Khanna’s portrayal of a psychopathic killer in Red Rose was not well received and the movie flopped.

At the height of his career as a flamboyant dancing chevalier, Shammi Kapoor dared to play the role of an honest man drawn into a world of crime in Ujala. But that was a one-off, and he went back to his boisterous Elvis persona in subsequent movies.

Nutan played the role of a murderer in Bandini to break her typecast as the innocent woman that the hero falls in love with. Both critics and audience loved this side of Nutan, and she won the Filmfare award for this movie.

Jeetendra transformed himself from the sensitive sculptor in Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne to Mr Jumping Jack in Farz. His career took a turn after Farz until Gulzar resurrected the serious actor in him.

The box office is the ultimate arbiter of whether or not the break from typecast was successful.

About This Quiz

“Bollywood Trivia – Breaking the Typecast” celebrates the talent and creativity of actors who have time and again reinvented themselves by breaking the typecast they were placed in.

In many cases, the transformation is a combination of shift in character, shift in appearance, and shift in the genre of the movie itself.

I have selected actors and roles that I felt represented one of two things – a radical transformation of that actor’s career, or a one-off but stunning portrayal demonstrating the depth and versatility of their acting skills.

I have also tried to balance between male and female artists as well as generations of actors. In each case, my attempt was not always to look for the most radical transformation, but rather to look for the first time that actor attempted a change of image.

I hope you enjoy taking this quiz as much as I did creating it.

How It Works: Rules & Explanations

• 1. Look at the actor’s picture
  Each question shows a Bollywood actor or actress. The accompanying picture shows them the way they’ve been typecast in previous movies. In other words, if an actor was known for romantic roles, the picture shows them at their romantic best.
• 2. Guess the movie that broke that typecast
  Your challenge is to name the film where they look and act very different from the picture. Sometimes there could be more than one likely answer. In that case, look for additional clues within the question that narrows it down to the correct answer.
• 3. When in doubt, go with your gut
  Trust your movie memory, but don’t be surprised if the answer takes you to a different place.
• 4. Play fair, play for fun
  Try not to look up answers while you’re playing. The fun is in testing what you’ve absorbed over years of watching films, trailers, and award shows.
• 5. Count your score at the end
  • Add 1 point for each correct answer.
